Stabilize Historic Warehouse Stone Foundations
November 21 – December 31, 2019
Help stabilize the historic warehouse stone foundations for a week or more at Fort Davis National Historic Site. The workshops will be led by Master Stonemason Alan Ash who has 40 years’ experience working on historic structures, including 75 on the National Register. Alan will be leading a 6 week program preserving the ruins using all natural materials and traditional tools and methods. Participants can learn about appropriate mortars, mixing, laying stone and pointing up walls. Demonstrations on cutting and shaping stone will be included. All stabilization work will comply with the Secretary of Interiors Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.
There is no charge for this learning opportunity and volunteers can receive financial assistance with lunches and travel expense. The training is suitable for those in the trade who want to hone their skills or for the beginner. Lifting stone is not required. Join Alan in this unique and beautiful location in the Davis Mountains of West Texas for learning, enjoyment and a good experience.
