La Capilla de San Pedro
Chamita, New Mexico
In many villages of Northern New Mexico, late summer is a common time for mud plastering. The weeks after the monsoons have passed but before the first freeze rolls in is an ideal window of time for the remudding of our historic adobe structures.
In collaboration with Nuevo Mexico Profundo, the Mayordomos of La Capilla de San Pedro, and community volunteers, Cornerstones has worked diligently to repair and replaster the chapel. This included the removal of failing plasters, adobe repair in select locations, and reapplication of unamended earthen plasters on the Capilla’s exterior.
Throughout the duration of this project, volunteers from all over New Mexico traveled to help with the various stages of repair. Students from the Santa Fe Community College Adobe Construction Basics class also joined for several days.
Though work is still in progress, much has been accomplished thanks to this community wide effort and we look forward to continuing restoration efforts at La Capilla de San Pedro.
